Parent Letter: COVID-19 Grading

Dear HISD Parents & Guardians,

We hope this letter finds you well as we all continue to move through an unprecedented time. As school closures continue to be extended, decisions regarding the grading of assignments, promotion to the next grade level, awarding of credits & GPA calculation and class rank must be made. After much consideration, research & guidance from TEA, the following decisions have been made about those topics:

  • In lieu of grades, course completion will be awarded on a “pass/fail” basis for the remainder of the year. (Collecting grades was considered, but Hallsville ISD has the unique challenge of many of our students and staff not having access to the Internet in our rural community.)
  • Since many students still had “Incompletes” for courses in the 3rd nine weeks (for reasons ranging from medical absences to school-related absences) and there is no equitable way to make up missed instruction and tests during that time, the 3rd nine weeks will also be “pass/fail”.
  • This means that the Spring 2020 semester will be “pass/fail”, and GPA calculations for all high school credit bearing courses (including PreAP Algebra I and PreAP Spanish I at the Junior High) will not be affected by any work completed this semester.
  • For the Class of 2020 only, class rank will be calculated on grades collected up to the 2nd nine weeks of senior year and prior (rather than up to the 3rd nine weeks).
  • More information related to the Class of 2020 will be posted at our website at hisd.com by the end of this week.

In order for a student to be considered “passing” for the remainder of the year, the student must participate in either online instruction or in instruction provided through paper packets being sent home beginning the week of April 6th. Paper packets will be available at food pick-up sites beginning April 6th. You will receive communication about how to show evidence of work completed in paper packets from your child’s teachers. 

It is very important that every student is able to participate in at-home learning. If you are not able to access technology OR the paper packet, please notify your child’s teacher or call (903) 668-5990, extension 5011. We will make an individualized plan for your child.

Hallsville ISD’s goal is to promote every student to the next grade level (or course for high school) and to ensure that no student is negatively impacted by the unforeseeable circumstances of the COVID-19 closure. In order to do that, we need every parent’s help. Please see the next page ( or back side of paper copy) for ways you can help us show participation during the COVID-19 closure.

Participation in every class is important. Here is how parents can help from home.

 

High-Tech

If your child has access to technology at home, please ensure that they are participating through our At-Home Learning site to the greatest extent possible. 

  • Students should check their HISD email daily.
    • Instructions for accessing student email are on our Coronavirus Updates page at hisd.com.
  • Students should check into each class’s Google Classroom at least 2 times a week.
    • Each course will have a Google Classroom by the week of April 6th.
    • These classrooms can be found under the “learn more” tab in the At-Home Learning link on the district’s Coronavirus Updates page at hisd.com.
  • Students should submit and click “complete” on assignments as they are completed.

 

Low-Tech

If your child does not have technology access at home, please ensure the following:

  • Let your child’s teachers know. We want to create a plan for you!
  • Pick-up and complete paper packets at food pick-up sites beginning on April 6th.
  • Follow teachers’ instructions to show evidence of completed work. 
    • One idea is to take pictures of your child’s work and email it to the teacher using a cell phone. Other ideas will be developed as needed.

 

No-Tech

  • Notify your child’s teacher or call (903) 668-5990, extension 5011. 
  • We will make an individualized plan for your child.

 

Long-Term Planning Note

In an effort to identify any gaps in learning that have developed as a result of the COVID-19 closure, Hallsville ISD will make curricular adjustments in the Fall 2020 semester. This will include a compacted curriculum that reviews all essential skills from the Spring 2020 4th nine-weeks and accelerated instruction plans for individual students. The district plans to provide a universal screener to all students at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year to assess each student’s needs and develop targeted plans for each.
