A Letter From Jeff Collum, Superintendent of Hallsville Schools
Hallsville ISD Parents and Community Members,
Greetings and welcome back from the holidays! I hope and pray that everyone had a relaxing and refreshing break. I want to update everyone about TEA’s recently released new "A-F ratings” of schools and school districts across the state of Texas. I would like to first say, that Hallsville has always been established on the principles of doing what is best for students at all times. We are not defined by only state standardized tests that are given on one day during the school year. I know that our teachers and administrators pour their hearts and souls into doing everything they can to help our students succeed in the classroom and in life and that will continue to be the case. We have too many amazing things to celebrate in this district as the result of your hard work and dedication.
Furthermore, Hallsville ISD does not embrace a rating or ranking of our schools based on a state tests administered on one specific date. Our focus is to provide a quality education that far exceeds the parameters of this state accountability design. Our schools are so much more than one test on one day. While at least 16 other states have enacted similar letter grade rating systems, there is no definitive research that suggests these ratings have improved student or school performance. Additionally, I have to believe that the results of our students hard work and performance levels on the state and national stages provides more than sufficient evidence that we are doing something right!
I believe that our philosophy should continue to be this -- we will continue to do what is best for students and we know that testing, grading systems, legislation and legislators will always change. We will stand firm and steadfast by doing the right things for our kids. As a father of three sons (all Bobcats!) and a professional educator for twenty years, I appreciate you trusting us with your most precious commodity, your children, as we continually strive for excellence in education.
