What is the ACT? The ACT is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions. The test has 4 sections: English, Reading, Math and Science. The Essay is optional. The higher you score on the ACT, the more options for attending and paying for college you have. Each section is scored on a 1-36 point scale. Your composite score is the average of the 4 sections.
What is the SAT? The SAT is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions. The purpose of the SAT is to measure a high school student's readiness for college, and provide colleges with one common data point that can be used to compare all applicants. There are 3 sections: Reading Test, Writing and Language Test and Math Test. The Essay is optional.
What is the PSAT/NMSQT? The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), is a practice version of the SAT exam. You can only take the PSAT once per year. If you earn a high score on the PSAT your junior year, you could qualify to receive a National Merit Scholarship. The PSAT tests your skills in reading, writing, and math.
What is the TSI? The TSI Assessment (TSIA) is part of the Texas Success Initiative program designed to help determine if you are ready for college-level coursework in the general areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. This program will also help determine what type of course or intervention will best meet your needs to help you become better prepared for college-level coursework if you are not ready. If you are an entering college student in Texas, you are required to take the TSIA—unless you are already exempt based on the following:
-
ACT: Combinded score of 40 on English and Reading and a 22 on Math;
-
SAT: 480 or higher on the Evidenced Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) and a 530 on the Math;
-
Successful completion of college-level course(s); or
-
Enrolled in a Level-One certificate program
What is the ASVAB? The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery), which is a multiple-choice test that helps you identify which Army jobs (Military Occupational Specialties) would be best for you. The ASVAB measures your knowledge and ability in ten different areas. Your scores in four critical areas -- Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Mathematics Knowledge, count towards your Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT) score. The AFQT score determines whether you're qualified to enlist in the U.S. military. Your scores in the other areas of the ASVAB will determine how qualified you are for certain military occupational specialties and Enlistment Bonuses. A high score will improve your chances of getting the specialty/job and signing bonus you want.
Homeschool students who would like to take the PSAT need to access the following link and complete the form by August 30th. PSAT Registration for Homeschool Students
