The "H" Association

  • The Hallsville Athletics “H” Association has a long and proud history of honoring athletic excellence and tradition within the Hallsville community.

Established in 1933 by Coach Ben Pannell, the “H” Association was created to recognize and unite Hallsville High School athletes who have lettered in a varsity sport. It continues to serve as a symbol of pride and achievement for generations of Bobcat athletes.

Coach Pannell, widely regarded as a foundational figure in Hallsville athletics, served as the school’s first official coach from 1927 to 1938. Before coming to Hallsville, he was a standout athlete at Pineland High School and Stephen F. Austin State University. Known for his exceptional talent, Pannell reportedly turned down a professional baseball career in order to dedicate his life to coaching and serving the students of Hallsville ISD.

Membership in the “H” Association is earned through lettering in a varsity sport at Hallsville High School. The organization was built not only to recognize athletic achievement but also to foster a sense of camaraderie, school spirit, and tradition among Bobcat athletes, alumni, and community supporters. Its ongoing presence helps connect current student-athletes with the legacy of Bobcats who came before them.

In 1963, Coach Pannell furthered the organization’s mission by establishing the “H” Association Hall of Fame, a tribute to the most outstanding figures in Hallsville Bobcats history. Through this recognition, Hallsville ISD continues to honor individuals whose dedication, skill, and leadership have left a lasting impact on Bobcat athletics.
